These coins are restrikes produced by the Austrian Mint using the 1892 date mark to celebrate the introduction of gold coins issued by the Austro-Hungarian Empire featuring the image of Emperor Franz Joseph I. These coins have 90% gold content with a maximum of 10% copper for balance. Please note, these coins are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Emperor Franz Joseph I was the longest-reigning leader of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and one of Europe’s longest-reigning monarchs in the 20th century. He ruled the empire from its formation in the late-19th century until his death in the early 20th century during World War I. Following his death, the empire spiraled downward as the war turned against the Central Powers and the empire eventually dissolved following its defeat at the hands of the Allied Powers.
Emperor Franz Joseph I features on the obverse of the 1892 20 Francs/8 Florin Austrian Gold Coin. The design featured on this side of the coins captures an image of Franz Joseph I from late in his reign. In fact, this right-profile portrait was the last image of the Austro-Hungarian emperor to feature on any form of national coinage in the 19th or 20th centuries.
In the reverse design of 1892 Austrian Gold Coin Restrikes, the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire is featured. This design shows the seal of the Hapsburg Dynasty with the double-headed eagle supporting the shield. A popular image throughout European history, the double-headed eagle represents a culture’s view of its past and its future.
