Proof American Platinum Eagle coins are the only bullion coins from the United States Mint with rotating designs on one face of the coin. The reverse of Proof Platinum Eagles has a new design each year, with only the 1997 and celebratory 20th anniversary 2017 Proof American Platinum Eagles showcasing the same design.
The United States Mint has gone through various design programs for the reverse of its Proof American Platinum Eagles. The Preamble to the United States Constitution design program launched in 2009 is the longest to date with six different designs available. The very first series was the Vistas of Liberty collection running from 1998 to 2002.
Proof American Platinum Eagle coins have been available from the United States Mint in 1 oz of pure platinum in every year since 1997, but the fractional-weight options were only available until the Great Recession hit in 2008. The 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz Proof Platinum Eagles were only struck from 1997 to 2008.
On the obverse of all Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins is the image of the Statue of Liberty. Created in 1997 by John Mercanti of the US Mint, this design is used on both the bullion and proof versions of the coin.
The reverse of the Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins in this four-coin proof set include various designs dependent upon the year of issue and design program running at that point in time. The 1997 Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins, for example, feature an American bald eagle in flight over the nation as the sun rises.
All American Platinum Eagle 4-Coin Proof Sets available to you here today include all four weights available in the Proof Platinum Eagle Series between 1997 and 2008. The coins have denominations of $100 (1 oz), $50 (1/2 oz), $25 (1/4 oz), and $10 (1/10 oz).
