When the American Gold Eagle coin debuted in 1986, the bullion version of the coin featured the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. The proof coin debuted the same year, but was only available in the 1 oz weight. Fractional-weight proof coins were introduced by the US Mint over the next two years. The 1/2 oz coin debuted in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coin in 1988.
More importantly, when the American Gold Eagle coin debuted from the US Mint, it was the first gold coin struck by the US Mint since 1933 and the first coin in the US to feature a gold content greater than .900 since 1837. With a face value of $50 (USD), it was also the highest face value on a US coin at the time.
All 2013 1 oz American Gold Eagle coins in this listing are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, however, you might notice there are minor flaws on the surfaces including breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, and contact marks as a result of striking the blanks during production.
The obverse of the 2013 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin is the image of Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design featured Liberty in full-figure relief as she guides the nation forward with her torch. Saint-Gaudens’s design originally appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933.
On the reverse of the 2013 1 oz American Gold Eagle is the image of the American bald eagle. In this design, there is a nest with a group of hatchlings under the watchful eye of a female bald eagle. A male bald eagle is shown flying overhead. This design is exclusive to the American Gold Eagle series and was created by Miley Busiek exclusively for these coins.
