Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse side of 2022 Proof British Trade Dollar Gold Coins. In a design by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark, Her Majesty is depicted wearing both the George IV State Diadem and the Coronation Necklace. This effigy, which was released in 2015, is just the fifth overall portrait of the Queen used for coinage.
Britannia features on the reverse design of 2022 1 oz Trade Dollar Gold Coins. While the original trade dollar from Britain depicted the full figure of Britannia, this design shows her in a three-quarter close-up. She is wearing her standard helmet and we see her trident in the background. Also included in the design is a globe featuring the UK map decorated with the Union Jack flag. Inscriptions on the reverse include the words Trade Dollar and the initials for the East India Company.
Trade dollars originated when different countries realized they would need a common form of currency to allow trading to occur in a smoother fashion. Countries that have produced their own trade dollar include China, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom. George William De Saulles designed the original trade dollar for Britain, which was minted from 1895-1935. Rather than reproducing the De Saulles design, the East India Company has created an entirely new design as if the trade dollars were being launched today.
