Britannia bullion coins were introduced by the Royal Mint in 1987. The design of Britannia on the reverse of all coins in the series was created by Philip Nathan. His modern interpretation of a powerful Britannia figure was chosen from a selection of submissions offered to the Royal Mint in an artistic competition.

The series started out with only gold bullion coins available to investors. In 1997, the series gained a silver bullion version as well. In 2018, the Royal Mint introduced the first-ever platinum coins in the series.

Her image first appeared on a coin in Britain in 87 CE during the reign of Emperor Hadrian of Rome. This design shows Britannia with a shield emblazoned with the Union Jack as she stands along the coast holding a trident in her right hand.
