The Austrian Philharmonic Coins all feature the same obverse and reverse design elements regardless of the precious metal composition. The coins all share the designs created in 1989 by Thomas Pesendorfer, the Chief Engraver of the Austrian Mint. The designs in this collection honor the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, a cultural icon in Austria and widely regarded as one of the finest orchestras in the world today.

On the obverse of 2021 Austrian Platinum Philharmonic Coins is a depiction of the Great Pipe Organ. This musical instrument built into the Musikverein is the second version of a pipe organ installed in the hall since its completion in 1870. The first recital organ in the Musikverein was built by Friedrich Ladegast and first used in 1872. The modern pipe organ, known as the Great Pipe Organ, was built by the Austrian firm Rieger Orgelbau, installed in 1907, and refurbished in 2011.

The reverse face of 2021 1 oz Austrian Platinum Philharmonic Coins includes a vision of musical instruments. The instruments shown here include a cello at the center, four violins flanking the cello in pairs, and a bassoon, harp, and Vienna horn in the background.

Members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra are chosen from within the ranks of the Vienna State Opera. To join the Philharmonic, members must undergo a thorough application process and possess more than three years of experience in ballet and opera.
