2012 was a busy release year for the United States Mint and its American Silver Eagle coin program. In addition to increase demand for silver and rising mintage figures for the American Silver Eagle coin, 2012 was also a year of celebrations.

The San Francisco Mint was celebrating its 75^th anniversary, the US Mint released an American Silver Eagle two-coin proof set that featured a proof and reverse proof specimen. The Making American History Coin and Currency Set included another special Proof American Silver Eagle minted in San Francisco.

However, these 2012 (S) American Silver Eagle Coins are regular bullion releases that were quietly resuming production at the San Francisco Mint to supplement production from the West Point Mint. While the latter was officially in charge of striking the coins, the immense demand pulled the San Francisco Mint back into action striking American Silver Eagle bullion coins.
