Morgan Silver Dollar coins debuted in 1878 as the replacement for the Seated Liberty dollar design. The Seated Liberty dollar was halted in 1873 with passage of the Coinage Act of 1873. The act was aimed at ending the free coining of silver by the United States Mint, a program that allowed citizens to turn in silver for striking into dollars. The act also had the effect of ending the Seated Liberty silver dollar program.

Impressive for a specimen that is more than 130 years old, these coins have an above-average quality for surface and mint luster. There are no more than three or four minor contact marks on the coins and just a few light hairlines visible under magnification.

On the obverse of 1881 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins is the design of Liberty in left-profile relief. George T. Morgan sat with Anna Willess Williams as the inspiration for his left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty used on the obverse of Morgan Silver Dollars. Her figure has long hair kept in a loose bun at the top and she wears a crown and wreath. The crown as the word “Liberty” etched onto it.

The reverse face of 1881-CC Morgan Silver Dollars bears the heraldic eagle of the United States. A design as old as the US Mint itself, this version of the national seal was created for the Morgan Silver Dollar by George T. Morgan and offers a classical depiction of the eagle behind the US national shield.

All of these coins bear the “CC” mint mark from the Carson City Mint. Founded in 1863, the Carson City Mint was not operational until 1870. It struck coins from 1870 to 1885 and halted operations until 1889, at which point coining resumed until it was permanently closed following 1893 issues.
