The Gold Double Eagle coin from the United States Mint represents the largest denomination US gold coin ever issued. The coins may possess a few smaller contact marks scattered about the surface or one or two small patches of hairlines.
The Liberty Gold Double Eagle design was the first used on the Gold Double Eagle and the longest running, issued on the coins from 1850 until 1907. The Gold Double Eagles were not introduced until after the California Gold Rush, while the Gold Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle coins were issued as early as 1795 and had some of the earliest coin designs from the US Mint in this range.
On the obverse of 1857-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle coins is the Liberty Head design. Created by James B. Longacre, 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, the design depicts Liberty wearing a crown with her hair half up in a bun. There are 13 stars around her figure and the date mark of “1857” at the bottom.
The reverse of 1857-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle includes the Type I design in this series. The American heraldic eagle is featured with a brilliant sunburst around its design element. There is no national motto on these coins and the face value is inscribed as “twenty D,” both features that would change in later design types.
The United States Mint produced Liberty Gold Double Eagle coins at the Carson City Mint, Denver Mint, New Orleans Mint, Philadelphia Mint and San Francisco Mint. With an “S” mint mark on the reverse, these coins are from San Francisco. The US Mint produced 970,500 coins there in 1857. An additional 439,375 coins were produced at the Philadelphia Mint with no mint mark and 30,000 at the New Orleans Mint with an “O” mint mark.
