The Texas State Capitol Building that stands today in Austin, Texas is the third capitol building in state history. The very first was a modest, simple wooden structure that was used until 1853 when a second capitol building was built on the same grounds as the current structure. However, the second one burned to the ground in the great capitol fire of 1881.

At that time though, plans for a new capital had already been drawn up and approved. Today’s third capitol building was completed in 1888 and was known, at the time, as the seventh largest building in the world. The capitol building itself is topped by a massive dome that makes it the sixth tallest in the United States, and one of only a few taller than the US Capitol Building in Washington DC.
