The American Gold Eagle was first introduced by the United States Mint in 1986 following passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 by Congress. The bill allowed for the creation of a series of bullion and proof coins as the official gold coins of the US. The original series included four weights in bullion and one in proof.
On the obverse side of all 2016 1 oz American Gold Eagle coins is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty image. Originally created in 1907 for use on the $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin, Saint-Gauden’s image was the result of President Theodore Roosevelt’s persistent pursuit of Saint-Gaudens as the artist to redesign American gold coins.
The reverse side of all American Gold Eagles features a depiction of the national emblem, the bald eagle, that is not found on any other coin. In sculptor Miley Busiek’s design, a male bald eagle flies over the family nest with an olive branch in its talons, while a female stands guard below, vigilantly watching over the nest full of hatchlings.
Each of the American Gold Eagle coins in this product listing was produced at the West Point Mint facility in the US Mint system. These coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, which means they show no signs of wear and tear, though may feature spotted surfaces, breaks in the luster, or contact marks from production.
