If you admire the classic Gothic Crown design, you can thank not just artist William Dyce, but the entire artistic movement that inspired him. Known as The Gothic Revival, this era came about partly as a response to both industrialization and the radical Neoclassical styles of the 1700s. For some, a return to an older way of life was desirable. This change of spirit brought about revivals in Gothic architectural styles from the Middle Ages that featured ornate décor, pointed arches, and giant windows. When you examine Dyce’s work, the Gothic influences ring loud and clear.
The obverse of the 2022 Proof St. Helena Gothic Crown Coin features Queen Elizabeth II. This popular 2015 portrait was designed by Jody Clark on commission from the Royal Mint. When the design was accepted, Clark became the youngest artist to have their portrait accepted for Royal coinage. The coin’s hallmarks are inscribed along the rim of the coin.
On the reverse side of 2022 1 Kilo St. Helena Silver Gothic Crown Coin is an elaborate cruciform design. This outstanding work of art matches the original designed by Dyce, with a center featuring the Order of the Garter arms, and a cross-shaped depiction of four shields surrounding it. These shields have the same designs as the quartered shield found on the Royal coat of arms. The background consists of floral imagery to represent the flowers of Britain. The edges are filled with Latin lettering.
