Proof American Platinum Eagle coins debuted in 1997 with the bullion version, with both coins featuring the same designs on the obverse and reverse. However, the Proof Platinum Eagle became the first-ever US coin to feature a new, rotating design and theme on the reverse face with each passing year.
The Proof Platinum Eagle has been available in the 1 oz weight in every year since 1997, with a new design on the reverse for each new release. For these 20th anniversary issues of the American Platinum Eagle, the United States Mint is bringing back the original 1997 design for the first time ever.
On the reverse of the 2017-W 1 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle is the image of an eagle soaring confidently above America, with the sun rising to meet it in the background. This design was created in 1997 by Thomas D. Rogers, a former sculptor-engraver with the United States Mint who still carries out design work occasionally on a contract basis.
The obverse of all American Platinum Eagle coins features a design from former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Mercanti. It offers a close-up view of the face of Liberty from the Statue of Liberty. Engravings on this face include “Liberty,” “E Pluribus Unum,” the coin’s year of issue, and the national motto.
All Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins are products of the United States Mint’s West Point Mint facility in New York. The coins have a “W” mint mark engraved on the reverse just off the eagle’s wingtips below the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.
